As a nearly lifelong SF fan I have mixed feelings about Star wars. It lacks the qualities I love in the fiction of Asimov, Heinlein, Pohl and others, and it cheapens the genre, but it did bring in new fans. Star Trek comes closer to the feel of the classics.

 

I had to vote the `third option'. I don't dislike the movie, however. I dislike the hype, and how, imo, it is overrated.

The movie came out in 1977 so it being over 30 years old, I can understand how it is seen a "classic".

The special effects were very good for its time, acting ok, as well as plot, with some things that weren't intended to be funny, ending up that way for some of us.

I could have been spoiled by more complex sci-fiction, ie Andromeda Strain(1972?), I liked Soylent Green(1973) too.

I was `too old' for that movie, I preferred "The Demon Seed" (of the same year) with the smokin hot, 37 year old Julie Christie!:mrgreen:

 

Though, if I may point out Fluffy, that he did get into a car accident after "The Empire Strikes Back". And the results...well they weren't pretty.

 

I missed the boat for Star Wars fandom. I liked the movies well enough, and I'll watch them if they come on TV, but I really don't bother past that.

It was a decent sci-fi, but the latter movies in the series ruined the classic experience of Star Wars.

 

Used a dual-phase lightsaber. Called "Silverblade" by the Yuzhan Vong. Beat one of them in a fight that lasted two seconds; the Vong died before the fight even started.

You can have Serenity, Farscape, etc. Star Trek: the Next Generation I did like, but everything after DS9 can suck my dick.

Wrong. If anything inspired Star Wars it was Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. In fact, the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov has more similarities to Star Wars than Trek ever did. Not that I hate Star Trek. I love it, but I always compared the two like this: if Star Trek is a Ford Mustang (generally accepted as a high performance car), then Star Wars is an F-16 (not a car, but far more impressive than a Mustang). Still, this is one-sided since I've been a fan since I was three. It was my first movie, and I rarely watch anything that isn't Star Wars. If I hear the Twentieth Century Fox fanfare being played, the only thing I think of is "Is Star Wars coming on?"

And he pissed off a lot of fans saying it. Even Harrison Ford, a more than successful actor who tried to distance himself from his role as Han Solo for years, finally admitted that his career wouldn't have been what it is today if not for that very role. Took him two decades to say it, but the interview was worth waiting for. :excited:

I have to agree with you Rico, I thought Star wars was nothing more than an overglorified soap opera in a space setting!

 

Star wars was not a movie for Science Fiction fans! I've never been able to watch the whole original, much less the sequels and prequels, but it is an insult to fans of Pohl, Heinlein, and Asimov, as well as Arthur C. Clarke and many others.
I love fantasy as well, the Conan stories and the wild pun filled stories with wizards, gap dragons and love springs. I just prefer, most of the time to keep the categories separate.

 

How can anyone say that they hate star wars, the first 3 are classics

 

IV-VI were amazing and spawned a massive universe which I-III killed by completely changing and undermining the post ROTJ books...

Better ships in the earlier films, this isnt 40k the technology is still meant to advance not regress...

I am a huge fan of the original 3... I did see the new ones when they came out in the theater but they weren't nearly as good as the first 3, IMO..

 

I thought a tizowym was from hitchikers guide to the galaxy?
I've basicly every book from the han solo trilogies through to invincible, not interested in the books based on the new films...
Just waiting for the paperback editions of the newest series post invincible.

 

The Star Wars universe is vast and Wide.

When the Original Came out in the late 70's and the next during the 80's it was a HUGE success as well to pioneer new techniques and Filming. Even though the Prequels did not quite live up to the original it still none the less filled in the story of Darth Vader and added to the fan base.

Whether you love or hate it, irregardless Star Wars influenced millions of fans around the globe,not even Harry Potter could quite match the impact it had like Star Wars did (even with a total of 8 movies for HP). They engineered filming Techniques, Special FX that had not been utilized at the time, if there was, it had not in the been used in the way they did. Alot of movies after the original came out were highly influenced because of these techinques and plots.

Star Wars will always have a place amongst the greatest films, and influence in the years to come. Without these classics many great directors and the film industry itselft may never have had the opportunity to expand and utilize its full potential.
