Just the general site rules concerning age and personal information, blah blah.

Typically, when it comes to voting, there's been an unwritten rule of not voting for your own story, though that's not always the case.

Other than that, I don't think that there are any other rules.

Everything you need should be up front. We've got just a little under three weeks before deadline, which is a pretty good stretch of time even if you haven't started.

It is with deep regret, and after many attempts to the contrary, I will no longer be posting my work on this site. I really and truly wanted to win a CAW, just to be able to say, "I did it!" but the competition and the site is constantly embroiled in one disaster or another and the changes have been too many and too often.

I did come close to winning a CAW once but was banned from the site due to lies and malicious bullshit. My story was in the lead and I was unceremoniously thrown from the site. I won a breakaway competition, fairly and squarely but it was never truly recognised because the CAWSS was outside of the sanctity of the original CAW. No matter, it was a good story and it won votes.

Back to my main point. I am just unable to muster enough enthusiasm for any part of this site so for the foreseeable future, I will mainly be a spectator. Good luck to all of those who continue to support this sinking ship of a website!

Okay, so I'm done with my first draft. Time for editing. Still waiting on my partner for the co-written story. Seems like she might have dropped off the edge of the planet.

How's everyone else coming with their story?

 

Took a break last night and dashed off a nasty little non-entry.

My real entry uses a different opening line. The characters are done with the third sex scene and debating the merits of changing the sheets or cuddling to avoid the wet spot. There won't be much verbiage after that, so if the actual plot makes sense on a critical re-read, I'm in good shape.

Also working on my failed second CAW #20 entry, a take-off on Little Red Riding Hood, and an incomplete CAW #19 entry based on a Jefferson Airplane "B" side song that never got much airplay.

 

To be honest, a reader has pretty much ruined this for me. I doubt that I will submit.

 

That makes me a little disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing you in this one. I hope you may reconsider.
Without thinking I was going to enter, out of nowhere a story started up in my head. Now I'm thinking I might enter after all. How about a deal?

I've been on this good planet for over half a century. I've seen fortunes rise and fall. I've seen dragons appear and slain. I've been a part of more than one union, being better to have loved and failed then never to have loved at all. I've seen fire and I've seen rain, and I hold with those who favor fire.

Why, oh why must we pervert ourselves in tandem effort to write about marijuana? It's a gateway drug! It will poison the mind, not expand it. I can't, in good conscience, subject a partner...

My writing partner and I finished the co-written entry this weekend, and this is how I feel about that:

My first draft needs work. A lot of it. Much as I hate to do it, I need to flesh some things out and make the story longer.

 

I sat down, gave myself a maximum of one hour, said it had to be less than 1,000 words, a first draft only, and on-topic. Here's what I had fun with today...

"Could it be that she was the sister of the boy in Kansas who loved the girl with the tattered shawl who was the daughter of the maid who had escaped from the pirates?"

The intern frowned. "No way," he said out loud.

"Why not?" asked another intern, as the young woman who made the statement sat down, casting a look at the first intern.

"You really want to do this? Here? Now?" said the first intern, his jaw set with firm determination.

The tension in the room was dialed up to high-voltage levels. A dozen or so heads were now focused on the dialog.

"Fine," he continued, "I'll explain." He took a deep breath and stood up, not noticing the man who quietly entered through the back of the dimly lit room.

"First, they weren't pirates. By definition, a pirate attacks and ROBS at sea. They were not interested in robbing, which by definition is taking something of value from someone else without their permission and with the intent of malice. They were, at best, sexual predators who sought nothing more than physical gratification, and, unless she was a virgin, for which they'd then be guilty of robbing her of her virginity, which certainly would have value assigned to it, they were nothing more than perverts, deviants, and criminals. Being that you stated that she had a daughter, unless she was blessed with immaculate conception, for which there'd need to be a papal investigation and finding, she was not a virgin, so, the predication of value is negated, hence, no robbery, and thus, no classification as pirates.

"Second, she was not a maid, which by definition is a female domestic servant, or by archaic definition an unmarried young woman or a virgin, which we established that she was not. Her duties, as previous covered, included tasks that were far beyond those qualities typically found in a domestic servant, which establishes her with higher intrinsic worth. While she did carry out 'maid' duties too, those were not her singular function, nor was she compensated on a level for the average domestic servant as established by the latest wage earner survey from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Third, there has been no announcement of maternity testing to establish the relationship of the 'maid' to the proposed 'daughter', so anything pointing toward that type of a familial kinship is conjecture at best. Granted, there are certain genetic traits that are obvious in both, from clusters of concentrated melanin, aka freckles, to similarities in skin coloration, hair color, and even bone structure. However, without medical documentation, this is just a speculative postulation.

"Fourth, the claim of a 'tattered shawl' doesn't stand up because a shawl is a piece of fabric, and fabric is made up of cloth, which is produced by weaving or knitting, and cloth is woven from wool, cotton, or a similar fabric. A closer examination of the photo of the garment clearly shows that it is constructed of interlocking layers of metal, more commonly known as chain mail. The 'tattered' appearance is simply where some of the linkages have come loose. But metal used in this manner does not qualify as fabric.

"Fifth, the clause 'boy in Kansas who loved the girl' is riddled with issues, starting with the claim of Kansas. Where have you established that the domicile is Kansas? In the photo you presented for examination, the boy is standing near a sign that says 'Topeka' on it, yet, that far from establishes that it is Kansas. In fact, if you look closely, you will see at the very bottom the words "Established 1893". Topkea, Kansas, was founded in 1854, yet, Topeka, Indiana was indeed founded in 1893. We're talking Hoosier state, not Sunflower state. Further, on the question of love--"

"STOP!!" screamed the young woman, on her feet now.

The young intern halted his speech, his disheveled appearance and unkempt hair a match for his surprised expression.

"This is why I broke up with you, Al. This is why you never get anywhere with women. You...you...IDIOT!"

The woman stalked off before he could respond.

As the group sensed all of the drama had been played out, they quietly left in small groups, leaving the young man to his own thoughts. All but the older man who now approached the younger, reaching out and putting a hand on his shoulder.

"Mr. Einstein," he said, ruefully, "you have a lot to learn, young man, a lot to learn."
